'The Garcias': HBO Max Reboot of 'The Brothers Garcia' to Premiere Next Month
A brand-new comedy series, The Garcias, is heading to HBO Max on April 14. Expected to have ten episodes total, The Garcias is a reboot of The Brothers Garcia, an early 2000s teen sitcom from Nickelodeon, the first English-language sitcom to have an all Latino cast and crew.
The show follows Larry Garcia’s retelling of his teenage years as the youngest son in the Garcia family. He recounts his life growing up with his history professor father and hairdresser mother. Many of the show's plots revolve around Larry finding his sense of individuality from his two older brothers, the ever-studious George, and Carlos, an athlete, as well as his fraternal twin sister, Lorena. The show involved stories around the everyday life of the family living in San Antonio, Texas, which often involved work, school, and the ins and outs of growing up. It ran for four seasons and won multiple awards.
The reboot picks up with the Garcia family fiteen years later while on a summer vacation on the Riviera Maya in Mexico. The Garcia children are now grown adults with their own children and have come a long way since the original series.
The series stars six original cast members from The Brothers Garcia who will reprise their roles: Ada Morris as Sonia Garcia, Carlos Lacamara as Ray Garcia, Alvin Alvarez as Larry Garcia, Jeffrey Licon as Carlos Garcia, Bobby Gonzalez as George Garcia, and Vaneza Pitynski as Lorena Garcia. New acting talents to the series include Oliver Alexander as Max Garcia, Nitzia Chama as Ana Garcia, Paul Rodriguez Jr. as Julian Ramirez, Maeve Garay as Victoria Garcia, Elsha Kim as Yunjin Huh Garcia, Ayva Severy as Andrea Huh Garcia, and Trinity Jo-Li Bliss as Alexa Huh Garcia.
The Garcias will be produced by New Cadence Productions, which was co-founded by The Brothers Garcia co-creator and executive producer Jeff Valdez. He is expected to serve as showrunner and executive producer of The Garcias, as well, along with Sol Trujillo, who is also from New Cadence Productions. The production company is well-known for producing stories by Latino and Latina creatives and providing more representation in Hollywood. Other works include HBO Max’s Ha Comedy Festival and Comedy Chingonas.
The Garcias premieres on HBO Max on April 14.
